Gout Diet

Gout is an inflammatory joint disease which causes pain and inflammation, and generally develops over time because of a buildup of uric acid crystals in the joints and in the surrounding tissue. If you are one of many who have been diagnosed with gout you can try some of these tips to help alleviate some of the pain:

  • Rest the joint that is affected until the attack begins to ease and then for another twenty-four hours following the attack.
  • Elevate the painful joints.
  • Relieve inflammation by taking non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). You shouldn’t take aspirin because it can change the levels of uric acid causing the symptoms to become worse.

To keep gout from coming back time after time you can try some of these tips:

  • Maintain a healthy weight – If you are overweight you should try eating a diet that is low in fat and sugars, but do not begin to fast or partake in extremely low calorie diets.  Eat healthy and the weight will come off over time.
  • Do not consume a lot of alcohol – The alcohol you consume can lessen the release of the uric acid by the kidneys and into your urine which will cause an increase of uric acid to develop in your body.  Beer tends to be worse than any other type of alcohol.
  • Limit intake of seafood and meat – Both of these can cause the uric acid levels in your body to increase.
  • Check other medications – If you are currently taking any other medications you should talk to your doctor about any gout remedies before you begin to use them.  These medications can work against one another and the side effects could be devastating for you and your body.

To lower your risk of gout you can make some lifestyle changes like the one’s listed below:

  • Maintain a weight that is in line with your height.
  • Exercise regularly
  • Avoid seafood and meat in your diet
  • Continue to take any medications that your doctor has prescribed for you for your gout condition

Gout is caused by the overproduction of uric acid in the body and occurs when the kidneys do not function properly to eliminate the uric acid that your body has produced.  When this happens it is important that you speak with your doctor so that you can begin some gout remedies that he can prescribe or that you can factor into your own diet and lifestyle.

Gout is not a life threatening condition, but it is uncomfortable and can cause you great discomfort and can even have an effect on how you live your life.  It can interfere with your daily activities and should be taken seriously and treated effectively.
